SELF PORTRAIT

This illustration was made as a self portrait in 1993. At the time I was 20 years old and working very hard at establishing myself as a professional artist. I was very young in mind and spirit and in retrospect this illustration perfectly explains my naive ambitions toward taking the next step and actually becoming an artist for a living. I understood my talents, but I unknowingly held the best of my skills inside. The episodes I've lived through and incredible experiences I've had in my life make me very aware that I will always be looked after by forces represented in this illustration as the spirit guides, whether they come from within me or are of a force unknown. This piece means a great deal to me and always will since I drew it on a shoebox in a stream of consciousness style that could only be described as beyond me. It took 3 years of looking at this illustration over and over for me to understand it and seeing it in it's true light came instantaneous.
